CHAPTER NINE
Mel slept well, and when she heard Ainia during the night, she was surprised when Alinta didnât hear her too. Alinta had the senses of a wild animal, but Mel knew she had exhausted her lover with their love play, so she wasnât concerned when she didnât awaken at their daughterâs cries this one time. She rose, wrapping her robe tightly around her. The robe had come from Sydney, and it fit her well. It was made of a material that didnât cling to her frame, which allowed her to wear it without her wrappings on her breasts. She tied it off as she went to get their daughter, finding her crying in the room they had set up for the baby. There was a matching crib in their room too. Mel had OâGrady make two of them. She was grateful the little girl hadnât been in their room the previous night. She shushed Ainia, changed her, and washed her lightly, so the urine that had cooled her didnât remain on her skin. She changed Ainiaâs damp clothes and wrapped her in a blanket, but the poor little girl was still restless, and Mel knew this meant she was hungry. Mel was going to have to wake Alinta. She was sorry that she couldnât feed their daughter.
As she walked into their bedroom, she closed and locked the door, then looked at Alinta in the light of the lamp she had left on low on the table beside their bed. The serene look on her wifeâs face reminded her of the lovemaking they had participated in earlier and made her smile. She looked calm and peaceful, and if she felt as good as Mel had, she needed to sleep. Ainia squirmed, reminding Mel that the baby needed to be fed. Alinta was still naked, and Mel wondered if she could manage to feed their daughter without waking the woman. She slowly crawled into their bed, angling the baby towards her wifeâs exposed and obviously full breast. The child latched on with an enthusiasm that made Mel cringe. That had to hurt, but her wife never flinched. Instead, her breathing changed, and she slowly woke up and looked down at their child in surprise, then back up at Mel. She smiled as she snuggled the baby closer to her. Her hand reached out, caressing Melâs arm in remembrance of their earlier intimacy. Mel loved this moment so much she could have cried. She hoped she would remember it forever. She watched as the baby suckled, and when she was finished with the one breast, Alinta made to sit up, but Mel stopped her.
Taking the baby, she whispered, âRoll over and scoot onto this side,â indicating where she was getting off the bed. She carried Ainia around the bed and got back in, scenting the wet spot that had dried with her wifeâs amour. They repeated that position, tucking the baby in against Alinta again. The baby wasnât as hungry anymore. She was more content with a nearly full stomach from the first breast.
